Sunway’s Health Awareness Programme

Health Awareness Programme

Medical health checkup program

Sunway’s flagship hospital, Sunway Medical Centre, regularly organises public forums conducted by medical specialists and consultants to educate members of the public on various medical related issues including diagnoses, symptoms, prevention and cure of illnesses.

Sunway Medical Centre also regularly conducts medical symposia focusing on different topics for General Practitioners to be cognisant of current medical practices. In 2014, the three main Symposia focused on specialised topics namely Speech & Hearing: Bridging the Gap, Women & Children Updates and Facial Pain.

Sunway Medical Centre recognises the need to screen for prevalent diseases such as diabetes and high Body Mass Index (BMI) among the community. Its medical professionals including its doctors and nurses reach out to a host of communities to conduct health screenings comprising areas such as blood pressure, blood glucose, BMI, cholesterol, among others. More than 5,000 individuals from some 60 organisations have been screened as part of the CSR effort.

In its ongoing mission to cultivate healthy living among Malaysians, Sunway is also committed to raising awareness of kidney and liver health, and complications related to diabetes. While the former is activated in partnership with the National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia (NKF), and the Malaysian Liver Foundation (MLF), the focus on diabetes complications is primarily driven by Sunway Medical Centre.

Kidney and Liver Health

Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah sits on the Board of Trustees of the National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia (NKF) and the Malaysian Liver Foundation (MLF).

In collaboration with NKF, Sunway has successfully raised some RM2.5 million from fund-raising dinners in 2006, 2010 and 2014.

The funds from 2006 and 2010 were used to acquire two units of NKF LifeCheck Mobile Health Screening, outfitted to conduct health screenings around the nation and to provide early detection and prevention of kidney disease.

In 2014, the funds were raised to support NKF in establishing a kidney transplant promotion unit nationwide.

Diabetes Awareness

Launched in 2012, the annual diabetes campaign “Let’s Take 5” spearheaded by Sunway Medical Centre (SunMed), focuses on the five diabetes complications (brain/stroke, eye, heart, kidney, foot) in conjunction with World Diabetes Day held annually in November. The campaign includes exhibitions, screenings, activities, health talks and games organised with the intent to raise awareness, educate and empower people to take control of Diabetes, a “silent disease” among many.

One of the initiatives under this campaign was Sunweigh Challenge, an internal programme introduced to encourage employees within Sunway Group of companies to promote and to encourage a healthier lifestyle among its employees.

The four-month Challenge is based on Sunway Group’s Workplace Wellness Programme and Sunway Medical’s ‘Life-changing Education through Activity and Nutrition’ (LEAN) programme which is a comprehensive and holistic healthy lifestyle, and an interventional weight management programme for children and adults.

In conjunction with World Diabetes Day 2014, SunMed has also collaborated with Diabetes Malaysia to organise World Diabetes Day celebrations and launched the Children’s Fund with Malaysian Endocrine & Metabolic Society (MEMS)* as an ongoing effort to promote awareness of diabetes mellitus.

*MEMS is a non-governmental organisation which serves to advance the interest and practice of endocrinology and metabolic diseases among the medical fraternity in Malaysia.
