A Little about Diabetes
Diabetes mellitus, or simply diabetes, is generally a condition in which the body does not produce enough, or properly respond to, insulin, a hormone produced in the pancreas. This results in an abnormally high level of sugar (glucose) in the blood.
It is a common condition that afflicts 14.9% of adults above 30 years old in Malaysia and this figure is likely to rise in the future.
There are several types of diabetes, i.e. Type 1 Diabetes, Type 2 Diabetes, Gestational Diabetes, etc. Complications of this condition include heart attack, stroke, kidney and eye disease, nerve damage, etc. Because of the chronic nature of the illness and the potential complications that may arise from the disease, regular medical checks with adequate treatment of diabetes, as well as lifelong commitment to healthy lifestyle are central to the overall management of individuals with diabetes.
