The Tun Hussein Onn Library at Sunway College, named after the late Tun Hussein Onn, who was Malaysia's third prime minister and first chairman of Sunway, has been described as a state-of-the-art interactive library.

"The use of computers, especially in the e-library, can be utilised to connect the Tun Hussein Onn Library to the rest of the world,'' said Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Hishamuddin Hussein, who is the son of Hussein.

Hishamuddin, who is the son of former Prime Minister, recently opened the library. Also present were Sunway Group chairman Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah and Sunway College principal Elizabeth Lee.

The fully resourced 58,000 sq ft library is equipped with a Multimedia Resource Centre and up-to-date Internet access and CD-ROM facilities.

In his speech, Hishamuddin touched on the role of a library in shaping an intellectual society and instilling in the young a love for knowledge.

"I feel deeply honoured and proud to be officiating at the launch of a library named after my father,'' he added.

Speaking later, Cheah, who is the founder of the college, said: "In the lifetime of an organisation, an official opening is an auspicious and significant event.

"For the Tun Hussein Onn Library, the opening recognises the fact that the library is performing the time-honoured tradition within which libraries operate-namely, to give services to all equally, to ensure quality in that service to the best of its ability, and to support the teaching and learning needs of its clientele.''

With a collection of over 55,000 items, the ultra-modern library is additionally linked worldwide for easy access to international databases and hundreds of electronic journal titles.

Located on the second and third floors of the college's Central Administration Block, the library serves both the college as well as the Monash University Malaysia and can accommodate up to 1,200 people.

The second floor houses the Humanities and Social Science collections while the third floor houses the Science, Technology, Reference and Law collections.

The library is staffed by 30 professionals, technical and support staff with relevant qualifications.

All staff are trained in various aspects of librarianship including automation, technical processing, bibliography and reader education.

Over the past two years, more than RM3.5mil had been invested for the purchase of books, periodicals, AV materials and electronic databases.

In addition, a large amount of funds were also spent on renovations, refurbishments and to purchase equipment.

The integrated library system installed has made it possible for every library user to retrieve information and borrow library materials easily and expeditiously.

In 1998, a total of 272,000 people visited the library, followed by 430,000 in 1999 and over 535,000 last year.

The library opens from 8.30am to 10pm from Mondays to Fridays and from 8.30am to 3pm on Saturdays.
