143 LOWER INCOME FAMILIES CELEBRATE EARLY “DEEPAVALI CHEER” WITH SUNWAY

  • Sunway contributes RM150,000 to bring a brighter Deepavali celebration to 143 families as part of #sunwayforgood CSR initiative

Seberang Jaya, 28 October – Festive seasons are celebrations that every individual, young or old, looks forward to every year. It is a happy occasion where families come together to enjoy a delicious spread. However, this is not the case for the lower income families in Penang as they find it difficult to even put food on their table on a daily basis.

Deepavali came early for some 143 families as Sunway Group (Sunway) treated them to a scrumptious luncheon in the Sri Cengal Ballroom of Sunway Hotel Seberang Jaya. In addition, each family also received financial aid, groceries and school bags for school-going children.

The event, aimed at spreading festive joy to members of the lower income group, was made more memorable by the presence of YB Prof. Dr P Ramasamy, Deputy Chief Minister 2 of Penang. He expressed his gratitude to Sunway for their ongoing support towards giving back to the society and ensuring that no one is left behind.

“It is indeed a meaningful gesture, and we are glad the Deepavali celebration for these families are made brighter this year. We hope more corporations will follow the footsteps of Sunway, to contribute not only to the economy, but also to the rakyat.”

“We are very happy that our contributions are able to impact the lives of these families. Building a community is part of our Sunway identity, and our Sunwayians are always ever-ready to devote their time and effort in making a difference in someone’s life,” shared Bernard Paul, Assistant General Manager of Group Brand Marketing & Communications of Sunway Group, who handed out the financial aid to the heads of families.

He added, “We also would like to take this opportunity to raise public awareness towards the 17 United Nation Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Sunway brand has always been a strong advocate towards achieving the SDGs but this is not something we can do alone. We hope more individuals and organisations will come together and work towards building a sustainable future.”

The event is part of Sunway’s Light of Hope programme which is under its C.A.R.E (Community Aid, Reach-out and Enrichment) project, a pillar of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative to enrich the lives of the community. This “Deepavali Cheer” initiative in particular is in line with the SDGs #Goal1: End Poverty and #Goal11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.
