850 STUDENTS RECEIVE ESSENTIAL SCHOOL SUPPLIES WITH SUNWAY ‘BACK TO SCHOOL’ PROGRAMME
Sunway City, 13 January 2018 ~ The Sunway Group acknowledges the importance of bridging the gap in education inequity through the Sunway Back to School programme this year, and brought smiles to almost 850 students in SK and SMK Bandar Sunway with special ‘back-to-school’ packages.
Each package contained a school uniform, a school bag, a water bottle, and track bottoms for sporting activities to start them off on the right track for the new school year.
In a recent survey conducted by the Sunway Group, families who sent their children to SK and SMK Bandar Sunway fall under the B40 classification (median income of RM 3,000) where 63% of the families whose children are studying at SK and SMK Bandar Sunway have a monthly household income below RM 2,000 a month.
Nor Siti Aisyah bt Mohd Samsory, mother to 12 year old Muhammad Nur Hafiy bin Mohd Zaini was overjoyed to see her child receive the back-to-school-package.
“Sunway Group’s contribution means a lot to us as it goes a long way to help us save some money from purchasing these school necessities. My husband and I only make about RM1,600 a month, and the money we save will go towards other necessities such as putting food on the table for our five kids. We need and appreciate the help we are getting,” she said.
This programme is in line with Sunway’s pledge to #SunwayForGood, which underscores Sunway’s sustainability and social responsibility efforts to create a positive and far-reaching impact on the nation. Education is one of the key pillars for this pledge in line with Sunway’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education which calls for equal access to education including children in vulnerable situations by 2030. The Back to School programme is part of the #SunwayForGood pledge to continue to do good, and stand alongside Malaysians for good by empowering and inspiring students to learn.
“Sunway is committed to ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education to all students, which ties in with UN Sustainable Development Goal 4 – Quality Education. We want to provide and promote a lifelong learning opportunity to each and every student so that there is no hindrance to their pursuit of knowledge. I am pleased to be involved in such an important event,” said Jane Poh, Senior General Manager of Sunway Group Brand Marketing and Communications.
Sunway’s relationship with SK and SMK Bandar Sunway began in 1995 when the corporation adopted SMK Bandar Sunway and helped rebuild the school after it was abandoned by the previous contractor, with further contributions made for construction, paint and repair works. Sunway subsequently adopted SK Bandar Sunway and has also contributed to refurbishment works for SK Bandar Sunway as well as the construction of the multipurpose facility “Dataran PIBG”. Over the years, Sunway’s collective contribution to the schools amount to more than RM4 million.
Additionally, since 2006, Sunway has also worked closely with SMK Bandar Sunway’s special needs students and the school’s non-profit GOLD (Generating Opportunities for the Learning Disabled) organisation which aids children with learning disabilities through job training and placement programmes. Furthermore, in 2010, the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation has pledged RM100,000 to develop an ongoing social enterprise business model for the learning disabled to equip them with skills that will sustain them through life.
“We are very thankful for the continuous support from Sunway Group in our effort to create a conducive learning environment for our students. These supplies will go a long way to relieve parents from the financial commitment required to purchase school necessities. We hope this will boost the confidence of our students, improve school attendance and allow them to reach their full potential on various activities without worrying about the lack of proper equipment,” said Pn. Haniza Mohd Jabar @ Ibrahim, Principal of SMK Bandar Sunway.
