The Banjaran Hotsprings Retreat is Malaysia’s first luxury wellness retreat. Located in historic Tambun, in the state of Perak, the five-star wellness retreat is nestled in a 16.59 acre valley amid lush tropical jungle, a natural geothermal hot spring and a cluster of magnificent limestone hills. Just 15 minutes from the town of Ipoh, The Banjaran is strategically situated between two major cities in Malaysia – 1.5 hours drive from Penang and just 2 hours by car from the capital Kuala Lumpur.
The Banjaran is an integrated luxury wellness and spa retreat with its primary focus on health enhancement and balance. The environment and philosophy is geared towards relaxation, rejuvenation, fitness, healthy eating habits and overall renewal, encouraging a healthier lifestyle change to all who visit. Here, the three strands of Malay, Chinese and Indian traditions intertwine, breathing new life into contemporary wellness practices and creating a unique and highly authentic wellness experience.
A self-contained sanctuary, The Banjaran consists of 25 well-appointed luxury villas that blend with their natural surroundings. Each villa is equipped with all the modern conveniences one has become accustomed to. It also features an outdoor terrace and patio for in-villa dining, private plunge pool plus complimentary butler service. The therapeutic qualities of water are emphasized in the bathrooms and outdoor bathing areas by creating a private water sanctuary, fitted with outdoor rainforest showers and jacuzzis that have geothermal hot spring water on tap piped directly from the source.
The Banjaran offers a variety of wellness experiences including holistic exercise disciplines such as Yoga, Qi Gong and Tai Chi practiced in this amazing natural setting and a host of unique offerings including the natural hot springs and thermal steam cave, a 260 million year old meditation cave, outdoor rainforest shower, a foot reflexology walk, onsen dipping pots and a Dr Fish Pond.
The main restaurant, The Pomelo, has indoor and outdoor seating complete with gazebo and features spa cuisine which utilises the freshest organic and locally sourced fruits and vegetables, fresh seafood and premium poultry dishes designed to be well-balanced and easily digested yet delectable, enhancing health and longevity through the love of great food.
The Banjaran boasts an extensive spa menu inspired by the rich cultures and healing traditions found in Malaysia with authentic Malay treatments, and Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine which include doctor’s consultations and treatments. The menu also encompasses consultations in wellness, naturopathy, nutrition and fitness, colon hydrotherapy, antioxidant restorative therapy and hydrotherapy. The energy healing treatments include Reiki and Chakra Energy Balancing. There are also a variety of massages, foot reflexology, organic facials and body treatments to cater for everyone, ultimately joining the spirit, the mind and the body in perfect unison.
The Banjaran also has its own line of aromatherapy skin and body care products and amenities made to international standards using natural and traditional recipes which are available for purchase upon request. In addition, the retreat is built on eco-friendly practices with conservation high on its list of priorities.
For instance, energy and water conservation encompasses everything from ventilation to the air conditioning system. Low flush toilet systems and extensive use of geothermal water augment the plan.
Locally procured construction materials have been used where possible. For example, the roofs of the villa units are constructed using palm leaf thatching and the interior decorations of the resort are derived from recycled wood, deadwood and driftwood. Waste is managed through a comprehensive on-site separation and recycling programme while nature conservation consists of a dedicated site for growing vegetation and fruit trees with organic pesticides. Special attention and care have been given to protect the natural environment and surrounding forests.
A “No Bleach” policy and use of biodegradable detergents where possible further enhances the conservation and environmental protection efforts.
At the villas and spa, recycled paper and alternative materials such as cornstarch are used in amenity containers instead of plastic to hold organic skincare products. Even kitchen utensils such as pots and pans are environmentally friendly in keeping with the total experience of being one with nature.
Excursions with a distinctly local flavour can also be organised in and around historical Tambun for guests including jungle trekking, fishing, cycling and a special tour of The 7 Wonders of Tambun.
The Banjaran offers health enhancement and new lifestyle experiences with a choice of short term and long term programmes ranging between 2 and 21 days. All rates are inclusive of villa accommodation, three meals per day, holistic exercise classes, educational lectures and selected spa and wellness treatments with a minimum stay of two nights.
