Kuala Lumpur – Joining the effort in the fight against global warming and climate change, the Sunway Group is proud to participate in the Earth Hour 2009. In support of the global campaign, Sunway Group pledged commitment by organising a three-day exhibition at the Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall themed, ‘Sunway Green Fair – A Sustainable Living Programme’. The main highlight of the event was a simultaneous switching off of all non-essential lights at every Sunway owned building on the 28th March at 8.30pm. The exercise also held a special significance for the Group as it showcased the Group’s united and integrated stand and green conscience.
The Sunway Group prides itself for being at the forefront of environmental causes. This includes pioneering efforts such as greening the Sunway area, implementing the ‘Bring Your Own Bag’ campaign and the latest online initiative focused on creating a smoke-free environment for the community. The campaign is championed via a specially constructed website (www.sunwaysmokefree.com) and currently has over 12,000 pledgers from around the region to the cause.
“Our approach has always been holistic and focused on responsible development. When we were asked to participate in the Earth Hour initiative by World Wildlife Federation (WWF), we did not have to think twice as we felt it’s our duty to preserve the environment and give our best to the society,” said Mr HC Chan, Senior General Manager of Sunway Pyramid.
“Apart from participating in the historic event and lining up interesting performances during the 60-minute switch off, the Sunway Group went the extra mile by organising various community driven activities during the three day exhibition. Our aim was to provide an avenue for the community to show their support for the cause as well to create awareness especially among the young on the importance of addressing environmental issues. Learning plays a pivotal role in the process and echoing the words of our Founder and Chairman, education is the best gift you can give to your children,” he continued.
YB Hannah Yeoh, ADUN of Subang Jaya officiated the launch of Earth Hour that was held at Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall. During Earth Hour 2009, the lights of the eye-catching lion head of Sunway Pyramid was switched off along with façade lighting at Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway University College, Monash University Sunway Campus, Sunway Lagoon Club, Menara Sunway, Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa, Pyramid Tower Hotel, Pyramid Suites & Studio and The Villas. The Group’s latest development, Sunway South Quay also turned off all lights at the show units and street lamps. The result was an extraordinary visual effect, demonstrating synergy and support for Earth Hour.
