Malaysian Liver Foundation Charity Dinner Raises Over RM600,000 for Public Education, Training and Research on Liver Diseases

Tun Dr. Mahathir launches MLF coffee table book to commemorate 19 years of journey

The recent Malaysian Liver Foundation (MLF) Charity Dinner 2015 themed “A Tribute to Our Patron” held at Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa raised over RM600,000 dedicated to public education and awareness, training programmes for doctors and research into hepatobiliary diseases (liver and biliary diseases).

Graced by MLF Patron Tun Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad, and his wife, Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah binti Haji Mohamad Ali, the charity dinner was also attended by more than 1,000 guests including Sunway Group Founder and Chairman Tan Sri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah, AO, who is a Founding Trustee of MLF, and MLF President Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Hj Mohd Ismail Merican.

The charity dinner is jointly organised by Sunway Group for the third time since its collaboration with the non-governmental organisation in 1997. The partnership is in line with the Healthcare pillar of Sunway’s Corporate Social Responsibility efforts which also include Education and C.A.R.E Projects (Community Aid, Reach-out and Enrichment).

Tan Sri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah in his welcome remarks commended MLF’s tireless effort in educating the public on liver diseases including viral hepatitis.

“When I first heard about MLF, there were no non-governmental organisations within the country which were dedicated to creating awareness and undertaking studies on liver diseases. Today, MLF is still the only non-profit organisation in Malaysia dedicated to the prevention, treatment and cure of liver, gall bladder and pancreatic diseases, through education, training and research. Malaysia will not be able to reach its ambition to be a developed nation if the health of its people is at stake. With these contributions, it will enable MLF to continue to intensify its efforts to create national awareness of liver diseases, especially among the young.”

In the past years, Sunway has raised more than RM3 million to support the Foundation’s efforts in promoting public awareness and improving the quality of treatment and research in liver diseases.

Funds raised from the charity dinner will also help the Foundation to establish international linkages with similar organisations worldwide, support patients to cope with diseases of the liver, gall bladder, bile ducts and pancreas.

“We will continue to do whatever we can to make Malaysians aware of the huge burden of liver diseases in this country and the region. 5-8% of our populations are Hepatitis B carriers; at least 1.5% of Malaysians have chronic Hepatitis C and at least 30% have fatty liver. Every year, 1,500-1,700 cases of liver cancer, 600-1,000 cases of pancreatic cancer and 250-300 cases of gall bladder cancer are being diagnosed in Malaysia. Most of those affected come too late for treatment as they are not aware of the disease either because the disease is silent or they are not aware of early signs and symptoms of the disease.”, said Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Hj Mohd Ismail Merican.

The charity dinner was also held in conjunction with the 11th Liver Update 2015 which gathers specialists, medical officers and allied health professionals to discuss on the current diagnostic tools and therapeutic strategies pertaining to hepatobiliary diseases.
