Sunway awarded RM569million Kelana Jaya LRT project

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16, 2011: Sunway Construction Sdn Bhd (Sunway Construction), a wholly owned subsidiary of Sunway Holdings Berhad, has accepted the letter of award for a contract worth RM569 million from Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad (Prasarana) for the construction and completion of facilities works (Package B) for the Kelana Jaya Line Extension Project. This will boost Sunway’s construction order book, to approximately RM2.5 billion.

The LRT extension project, estimated to cost over RM7 billion in total, was first announced in Budget 2009. Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad, a company fully owned by the Ministry of Finance, had been tasked to facilitate, undertake and expedite the project by the government. Prasarana is also the asset owner and operator of several public transport providers namely the LRT Ampang and Kelana Jaya lines, KL Monorail and the bus operations in the Klang Valley.

The Kelana Jaya (KJ) Line extension will link Kelana Jaya Station to Putra Heights via Subang Jaya. The facilities works for Kelana Jaya Line is divided into two packages, namely Package A and Package B.

Under Package B awarded to Sunway Construction, the facilities works will involve the construction and completion of facilities along a 8.1km route from Persiaran Kewajipan, Subang Jaya to Putra Heights. The works include site clearance, earthworks, viaduct construction, roadworks, drainage works, traffic management, structural works and temporary works.

The project is expected to contribute positively to the Sunway Group’s earnings for the financial year ending 2012 onwards. Works on the project is estimated to be completed in 29 months from the date of possession of the site
In a separate development, Prasarana has shortlisted Sunway as one of the companies eligible to bid for all the MRT packages under the open category which includes elevated civil works, stations and depot.

Sunway Holdings Berhad, a company listed on Bursa Malaysia, is currently in the process of merging with Sunway City Berhad. The merged entity, Sunway Berhad, will be one of the largest property-construction players in Malaysia, with a strong presence in the region. The listing of Sunway Berhad on Bursa Malaysia is expected to take place on 23rd August 2011.
