~ RM500 million investment for expansion and refurbishment by 2022~

A decade after opening its doors, Sunway Carnival Mall will embark on the next phase of its expansion by doubling its gross floor area (GFA) from the current 780,000 square feet to 1.45 million square feet of retail haven.

The expansion phase will add an additional 330,000 square feet of new nett lettable area (NLA) to the existing 500,000 square feet, bringing the final tally to approximately 830,000 square feet in NLA once the expansion phase is completed in the fourth quarter of 2020.

Once the expansion is completed, the first phase of the mall will be undergoing a refurbishment, which is expected to be completed by 2022. The total investment for both the expansion and refurbishment will amount to RM500 million.

With the expansion, the number of shops is also set to increase from the current 220 to 450 overall across both the new wing and existing wing, with 50% of the retailers offering fashion, 18% offering F&B and 32% in other trade categories. Car park capacity is set to grow from the current more than 1,100 bays to more than 3,000 bays with the incorporation of brand new upper floors and basement parking.

The expansion meets the growing demand of retail space from international retailers as the current mall is close to full occupancy. With the expansion, the mall will be able to offer a range of international retailers, effectively transforming the retail scene of mainland Penang.

Located on mainland Penang, Sunway Carnival Mall is part of Sunway Malls’ five retail assets and currently remains as the group’s only mall outside of Klang Valley. Sunway Carnival Mall which was opened in 2007 is one of mainland Penang’s largest and most popular malls, welcoming eight million visitations annually.

Sunway Group founder and chairman Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Sri Jeffrey Cheah AO said, “Sunway has been part of the Penang community for the last 25 years. Over the years, we are proud to have been given the opportunity to contribute through what we do best – Build-Own-Operate sustainable communities to support Penang’s socio-economic growth. Over the next 10 years, we will be deepening the relationship with Penang’s communities through the investment of RM 1 billion in the expansion of Sunway Carnival Mall and Sunway Medical Centre in Seberang Jaya. The expansion of Sunway Carnival Mall marks the beginning of our long-term vision for the way Penangites live, learn, work and play in a safe, healthy and connected environment.”

Furthermore, Sunway Group plans to expand its healthcare and education divisions in Penang. The pipeline includes the development of a medical centre in Seberang Jaya and a tertiary education establishment in the state.
