Sunway Group and National Kidney Foundation launch 2nd Mobile Health Screening Unit

Providing accessible healthcare to the Malaysian public

Bandar Sunway – Today marks a significant milestone for the Sunway Group and the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) as they launch the second National Kidney Foundation LifeCheck Mobile Health Screening Unit (NKF LifeCheck), a bus designed specifically to carry out health screenings in Malaysia. This is the second NKF LifeCheck for the NKF and its co-sponsor, Sunway. The first NKF LifeCheck that was launched back in January 2008 has been very successful in reaching out to the public, especially within the rural areas throughout Malaysia. To-date, NKF through the bus has managed to reach out to close to 150,000 people nationwide.

The Guests of Honor present at the launch were YBhg Dato’ Dr. Zaki Morad bin Mohd Zaher, Chairman of Board of Directors, National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia, and YBhg Tan Sri (Dr) Jeffrey Cheah, AO, Founder & Chairman of Sunway Group.

“Healthcare is a key pillar in Sunway’s efforts to give back to our communities and our partnership with the National Kidney Foundation is an example of how we work collaboratively to raise awareness around the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle and reach out to our communities to provide access to healthcare. Our partnership with the NKF began about 12 years ago and it brings me great joy to see how it has progressed through the years. I look forward to continuing our collaborative efforts with NKF,” said Tan Sri (Dr) Jeffrey Cheah.

The NKF LifeCheck is a customized 40-seater bus that provides a mobile platform for basic health screenings as well as those focused on the early detection and prevention of kidney-related diseases. Funding for the vehicle stems from a collaborative effort between Sunway and the NKF where RM877,380 was raised during NKF’s 40th Anniversary Charity Dinner. Among some of the unique features that the NKF LifeCheck has are seven work stations within the vehicle that are designed for various tests including blood pressure, Body Mass Index, and counseling.

In line with the Ministry of Health’s aim to increase the accessibility of health facilities and screenings to the public, the NKF LifeCheck also serves as an educational tool, screening vital educational health messages via video on board the mobile unit. Members of the public can also obtain pamphlets on various health issues related to the kidney. A service available to Malaysians from all walks of life, the mobile unit provides an avenue for Malaysians who would otherwise have no direct access to potentially life-saving information.

Dato’ Dr Zaki Morad stated, “The growth in number of kidney patients is alarming with an estimated 24,000 cases reported last year. We believe that the NKF LifeCheck is an invaluable tool in assisting to identify members of the public who are at risk of kidney disease and its related ailments. Early detection is vital in the prevention of kidney-related diseases and will help reduce the number of related cases.”

Sunway and the NKF, with the support of the Government, hopes to be able to encourage members of the public to take the necessary precautions and actions to regain, restore and maintain their health through healthy lifestyles with the support of the NKF LifeCheck.
