Sunway Group, one of Malaysia’s most formidable property-construction groups whose property investment division encompasses retail, commercial, hospitality and leisure sectors, today announced it has expanded its strategic collaboration with Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) Asia, a division of Viacom Inc. (NASDAQ: VIA, VIAB), a leading provider of youth and general entertainment content, to develop Nickelodeon Explorers’ Oasis at Sunway Lagoon. Nickelodeon Explorers’ Oasis will become the first Nickelodeon-branded attraction to be launched in Asia. Nickelodeon Explorers’ Oasis is expected to open in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia by March 2015.
Under the terms of the new agreement, Nickelodeon, one of the world’s leading global entertainment brands for kids and family, will bring its characters, expanded interactive shows, and signature green slime to Sunway Lagoon in Sunway Resort City, one of the region’s most preferred tourist destinations which receives an annual visitation of 40 million. Nickelodeon Explorers’ Oasis with a total investment value exceeding RM100 million will span approximately 3300 square meters within a new 7.5-acre park at Sunway Lagoon, and is suitable for families and visitors of all ages.
Nickelodeon Explorers’ Oasis at Sunway Lagoon will feature immersive attractions like an Oasis Lagoon Splash Pad and climbing structure, an interactive water play area using reactive technology, daily signature slime events, a variety of other water slide attractions, retail shops, games and food service establishments themed with Nickelodeon’s hit properties, including SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
“Building on the success of earlier collaborations on MTV World Stage Live in Malaysia held at Sunway Lagoon, we’re thrilled to bolster our strategic collaboration with Sunway Group with another exciting Viacom brand,” said Indra Suharjono, VIMN Asia’s Executive Vice President and Managing Director. “Nickelodeon is all about creating surprising and playful entertainment experiences everywhere we go for kids and their families. Together with Sunway, we anticipate offering a unique Nickelodeon experience to allow kids and their families in Malaysia and around the world, to connect with some of the most beloved Nickelodeon characters in the world, including SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.”
“This year, Sunway Group celebrates its 40th anniversary. We are proud to expand our collaboration with Viacom to bring to Asia one of the superstar brands in the global entertainment industry. The introduction of Asia’s first Nickelodeon Explorers’ Oasis at Sunway Lagoon is a milestone for both parties, and will undoubtedly bring lots of fun and excitement to the families who visit us, while solidifying Sunway Resort City’s position as one of the premier tourist destinations in the region,” said Tan Sri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah, founder and chairman, Sunway Group, adding that, the new addition at Sunway Lagoon would make Sunway Resort City, as a whole, a more vibrant and energetic place where people live, play, work, learn, shop, and, most of all, be in the pink of health, within a world-class destination.
Nickelodeon Explorers’ Oasis will add to Sunway Lagoon’s five existing parks namely Water Park, Amusement Park, Extreme Park, Interactive Wildlife Park and Lynton V Harris Scream Park as its operations and product offerings broaden to reach out to all target segments. The 88-acre Sunway Lagoon is already home to Vuvuzela, the world’s largest water ride and Waterplexx 5D, first 5D waterplex in the world. It is also the only attraction in the world to win Asia’s Best Attraction by International Association of Amusement Park and Attractions (IAAPA) for four consecutive years (2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010).
“This is an ideal location for Nickelodeon to start its themed-based attractions in Asia, which will no doubt open up opportunities for our recreation business in Asia. It is also an important next step in boosting the Nickelodeon experience across all facets of entertainment for families across Malaysia and Asia,” added Gerald Raines, Vice President, Recreation Business Development for Nickelodeon.
Nickelodeon Explorers’ Oasis at Sunway Lagoon will join several other Nickelodeon-branded attractions and parks around the world. In addition to Nickelodeon Universe in Minneapolis’ Mall of America, SeaWorld on the Gold Coast (Australia), Wet n Wild Sydney (Australia), Nickelodeon Land at Pleasure Beach Blackpool (UK), Nickland at Movie Park Germany and a new Nickelodeon Land to open at Parque de Atracciones Madrid (Spain), there are Nickelodeon attractions at the Universal Studios in Orlando, Fla. and Hollywood, Calif.
