~Contribution of groceries for urban poor and cancer-stricken families this Chinese New Year~

Kuala Lumpur, 06 February 2018 ~ 155 urban poor and cancer-stricken families from around the Klang Valley were in for a treat as volunteers of Sunway Group took them shopping for groceries at Sunway Putra Mall to cook a reunion dinner for their families on the eve of Chinese New Year.

The shopping trip was in conjunction with Sunway’s ‘Share Because You Care – Chinese New Year Cheer 2018’ programme, an annual initiative to reach out and touch the lives of the less privileged, and to create a sustainable impact in improving the lives of its communities, especially during major festive seasons. Over the years, Sunway Group has celebrated major festive seasons with more than 100,000 people from all walks of life across Malaysia.

As part of the commitment to #SunwayForGood, which is Sunway’s pledge to continue to do good, and stand alongside Malaysians, for good, various business units from Sunway, namely Sunway Malls, Sunway Property, and Sunway Medical Centre, came together to distribute provisions to the underprivileged for the upcoming Chinese New Year.

Each family received RM350 in cash donations for their groceries, in addition to a box of Yee Sang, health supplements and Ang Pow presented to them by YBhg Puan Sri Dr Susan Cheah, EXCO member of Sunway Group; Mr Kevin Tan, Chief Operating Officer of Sunway Malls and Dr Michelle Mah Li Fang, Director of Business Development & Corporate Communications of Sunway Medical Centre. In addition, Grab sponsored the transportation to and from Sunway Putra Mall for 100 families.

Each family was accompanied throughout their shopping expedition by volunteers from Sunway and the programme’s NGO partner, Kechara Soup Kitchen Society. More than 150 volunteers assisted them at each step – from selecting their items, loading their shopping carts, making the final purchase to helping them carry their groceries. The smiles from family members were evident throughout the whole programme as they befriended and bonded with the volunteers.

By creating the opportunity for families to select and purchase their own groceries, families could create reunion dinners using ingredients that best defined the traditions of their unique households, making their dinners more meaningful.

The families came from four associations and three foundations, namely Great Heart Charity Association (GHCA), Touching Lives Club & Padmasambhava Children Loving Association Klang, Persatuan Kanak-Kanak Kurang Upaya (P3KU), Subang Jaya Buddhist Association, National Cancer Council (MAKNA), National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM) and Breast Cancer Welfare Association Malaysia (BCWA), in addition to those identified by Kechara Soup Kitchen Society.

YBhg Pn Sri Dr Susan Cheah, EXCO member of Sunway Group said that the contribution was in line with the Group’s goals to build sustainable communities through social inclusion. “Sunway strives to make a positive impact in the communities in which we operate.  We believe that a community that celebrates together, stays together and grows together. It is truly a privilege to get to know these diverse individuals, their backgrounds, and their many hopes and challenges,” she said.

Previously, through the Share Because You Care – Malaysia Day 2017 programme, Sunway collected more than 2,300 kg worth of groceries across seven locations, which were distributed to 100 families in the Klang Valley and 20 families in Penang.
