Sunway Property in partnership with the Majlis Bandaraya Johor Bahru (MBJB) have launched the ‘Friends of Laman Tasik Pandan’ community initiative in the wake of increasing vandalism in public parks. The initiative is aimed at restoring and preserving the sustainability of the park, which was recently upgraded by Sunway Property together with the local authorities.

“A healthy and functional recreational park plays an integral role to foster better relationships between people within a neighbourhood and a community while staying connected to nature. As a true believer of ‘Living Sunway, Living Community’, we are delighted to be part of this joint effort to contribute towards the betterment of the local community. The restoration of Laman Tasik Pandan also helps strengthen our commitment as a Master Community Developer in forging a better and safer environment to live, learn, work and play in a well-connected environment for our communities,” said Gerard Soosay, CEO of Sunway Iskandar.

Laman Tasik Pandan was transformed from a run-down site into a community park after a year-long restoration effort by Sunway working hand-in-hand with MBJB. The upgrading and restoration works amounting to RM 2 million commenced in October 2014 and completed in September 2015 before the official handover to MBJB.

Sunway Property has restored various amenities in the park including replacement of damaged walkways, Surau, fences, shelters, public washrooms, fitness equipment, children’s play equipment as well as picnic tables. Additional amenities were integrated into the park such as a new jogging track, basketball court, playground, boardwalk around the lake and the main entrance signage.

As part of Sunway’s commitment in nurturing sustainable communities, the group also intensified its green efforts by planting 50 trees around the park. One of the key highlights of the initiative was the transplantation of a 100-year-old cotton tree which was relocated to a more conducive environment within the Sunway Lenang Heights development area.

“The local authorities do invest heavily in upgrading and sustaining public parks however the irresponsible behaviours of certain people have left the park in a dilapidated condition. The partnership with Sunway in revitalising Laman Tasik Pandan and bringing forth the Friends of Laman Tasik Pandan initiative is a programme we wish to emulate in other recreational parks within the city,” shared Tuan Haji A. Rahim Bin Haji Nin, Mayor of MBJB.

The ‘Friends of Laman Tasik Pandan’ consists of various agents who have made it their responsibility to ensure the welfare and maintenance of the park is well-kept for members of the community to enjoy. Frequent patrolling efforts, neighbourhood events, sports activities and other recreational programmes will be put in place by the committee to foster the camaraderie of all neighbours alike in a safe and lively place.
