The Sunway Group, in collaboration with the National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia, successfully raised RM877,000 for a second unit of NKF LifeCheck Mobile Health Screening Unit.

Founder and Chairman of Sunway Group, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah, AO yesterday handed the funds collected to Tan Sri’ Dato’ Dr Abu Bakar Suleiman, NKF President, Board of Governor.

“This is our unwavering commitment to help needy kidney patients and instil public awareness in a cohesive effort to reduce the annual increase in numbers. It is our hope that with this second unit we can achieve our target of screening a cumulative 120,000 patients by the end of 2011 and 180,000 Malaysians by the end of 2012,” said Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah, AO.

The second unit of the NKF LifeCheck Mobile Health Screening Unit is needed to meet the accelerated rise of 20% in the number of kidney patients in need of care in Malaysia every year.

In 2006, Sunway and NKF partnered to successfully raise RM780,000 to fund the first customized 40-seater bus, outfitted to conduct health screenings around the nation. The NKF LifeCheck was successfully launched in 2008, and has catered to 80,000 people, especially those in the suburban areas, thus far.

This year’s theme for the fundraising event commemorates “40 YEARS OF GIVING HOPE” to dialysis patients, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the National Kidney Foundation channelling hope and optimism to needy kidney patients. A coffee table book was also launched in tandem with the event by the two parties.
President of NKF, Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. Abu Bakar Suleiman, said that joint initiatives such as this is what the country needs to pursue progress as a nation.

“The Sunway Group has contributed a wealth of resources to our mission of saving lives through preventive education and early detection of kidney disease. Such dedication and commitment is exactly what we need from corporations. A healthy nation is a wealthy nation, and Sunway’s efforts are exemplary indeed.”
