Sunway Safety Week

Sunway to Strengthen Construction Safety and Sustainability through CIDB Collaboration

Minister of Works Datuk Haji Fadillah bin Haji Yusof launched the annual Sunway Safety Week 2015 today at Sunway Putra Hotel themed “Partnering Towards ESH (Environmental, Safety and Health) Excellence”. In conjunction with the launch, Sunway Construction Group Berhad and the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen collaborations between both parties in key areas of environment, safety and health for the nation’s construction industry.

Sunway Construction Group Berhad is the first construction company in Malaysia to sign a memorandum with CIDB in pursuance of project assessment by adopting Safety and Health Assessment System in Construction (SHASSIC).

Under the MoU, Sunway Construction Group Berhad is committed to have all of its projects assessed with the Safety and Health Assessment System in Construction (SHASSIC), which was developed by CIDB. This strategic collaboration is also aimed at elevating the standard of Environmental, Safety and Health practices in the construction industry.

CIDB Chief Executive Dato’ Sri Ir. Dr. Judin Abdul Karim said, “The success of Sunway lies in the vision of the leadership that put priority on safety and inculcates a culture of safety within the organisation. I feel this it is something all construction industry players should emulate.”

The MoU was signed by CIDB Chief Executive Dato’ Sri Ir. Dr. Judin Abdul Karim and Sunway Construction Group Berhad Senior Managing Director Kwan Foh Kwai. Both parties will cooperate and implement safety and health programmes in the areas of construction and construction technology.

Scope of SHASSIC covers three main thrusts which include documents check, site inspections and employee interviews. Based on the respective SHASSIC scores, customised trainings or remedial measures will be arranged to improve safety and health management of the contractors. Sunway Construction has also adapted the SHASSIC framework into its projects including the recently-launched Malaysia’s first elevated electric Bus Rapid Transit system (BRT-Sunway Line), and the ongoing development of Sunway Velocity which is slated for completion by 2018.

High-Level Safety Council Chairman and Sunway Construction Group Berhad Independent Non-Executive Director Dato’ Ir. Johari bin Basri said, “In the construction industry, safety is paramount, and is an investment which provides unseen benefits. A strong safety record also strengthens a company’s reputation, making it more competitive, and helps manage insurance costs over time – all crucial factors to its long-term success. We believe the way forward is to embrace and adopt Safety as an integral part of project progress as how we value Time, Cost and Quality.”

Sunway Construction had completed numerous iconic projects such as the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios, Legoland Malaysia Theme Park and Rihan Heights in Abu Dhabi. The construction firm also bagged the Builder of the Year Award at the Malaysian Construction Industry Excellence Awards (MCIEA) 2013, and the MITI Industry Excellence Awards (AKI) in the Category 3 Services Sector recently.
