Sunway stops Hunger

Staff volunteered to pack 40,000 meals for the underprivileged in conjunction with Sunway’s 40th Anniversary Celebration

Imagine a world without hunger. More than 250 Sunway staff volunteered in a Stop Hunger Now Meal Packaging Programme at Blue Concourse in Sunway Pyramid. This programme is under C.A.R.E. (Community Aid, Reach-out and Enrichment) Projects which is one of the pillars of Sunway’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts, which reaches out to communities. Thus, Sunway was responding to the plea of the United States-based Stop Hunger Now organisation, to sponsor, pack and distribute meal packages to the underprivileged communities within its area as a joint effort to combat hunger.

Organised by Sunway’s Leading With Passion 3.0 organising committee, the event also served as the launch pad for Sunway’s Leading With Passion 3.0, a platform to advocate Sunwayians passionate leadership outside the confines of workspace. In line with this year’s theme “Advocating It!”, Leading With Passion 3.0 encourages Sunwayians to express and practise passionate leadership by volunteering for Stop Hunger Now as part of building communities and enriching lives.

During the event, the enthusiastic team of volunteers who are also members of Kelab Sosial Sunway (KSS), formed assembly lines to pack 40,000 highly nutritious, high protein and dehydrated meals for the underprivileged communities which comprises rice, soy, vegetables, flavouring and 21 essential vitamins and minerals. Each package provides a reasonable serving for six and each serving costs approximately RM1.00 to produce.

Coinciding with Sunway’s 40th Anniversary Celebration, Sunway continuously encouraged staff to develop a heart of compassion and care by lending a helping hand within their capabilities. This also helps in engaging staff to foster better bonds, leading to better teamwork and a sense of belonging to the company.

Sea of Red – Sunway staff joined as volunteers to stop hunger

Corporate advisor of Sunway Group, Tan Sri Ramon Navaratnam in his speech said, “This initiative is timely as it coincides with our 40th Anniversary and apt as we launch our Leading with Passion 3.0 with the theme ‘Advocating It!’. By staff becoming involved in charitable work through advocating volunteerism with a passion, we hope to enhance employee engagement which helps create unity, builds better bonds and enables employees to feel a sense of belonging to the organisation that they work for,”

“Our core values of integrity, humility and excellence are values we hope to inculcate in everyone and we believe these will become deeply entrenched in our organisational culture. This initiative is special, not only as it is aligned to Sunway Group’s CSR philosophy and business model, but it has the nationwide involvement of Sunway Group with around 800 employees from the central, southern and northern regions participating, making this Stop Hunger Now activity, one of our biggest volunteer efforts for employees of the Sunway Group,” he added.

The beneficiaries of the programme are Myanmar Refugees who are based at ZOMI Education Centre in Bandar Sunway, the Chin Student Organisation in Bandar Puchong Utama, and the underprivileged community in Port Klang and its surrounding areas such as Kampung Samy and Klang Squatters. Reach Out Charitable Society will help distribute the packed meals to the underprivileged community where many single mothers and abandoned old folks are left to fend for themselves.

Established in 1998, Stop Hunger Now coordinates the distribution of food and other life-saving aid around the world. This resonates well with Sunway’s C.A.R.E. initiatives of building and enriching the lives of the community through giving aid and reaching out to them. Stop Hunger Now’s partner, Because, a social initiative by the Community Care Society of Malaysia also assisted in the programme by preparing the logistics and preparation of the meal.

This volunteering initiative in central region is only the beginning of Sunway’s involvement with Stop Hunger Now organisation. Sunway will also extend the same exercise in the southern and northern regions. It is an opportunity for Sunwayians in regional areas to be in touch with the local communities through Leading With Passion 3.0 and be part of a greater cause.
