Bandar Sunway, 9 April 2017 – Founder and Chairman of Sunway Group, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah AO received Victoria University’s 2016 Distinguished Alumni Award from Chancellor of Victoria University, Mr George Pappas, at the Victoria University Graduation Ceremony held at Sunway Resort Hotel and Spa.
Tan Sri Cheah graduated from Victoria University, Melbourne, Australia, with a degree in business and accounting in the 1960’s. Victoria University later became the first university to bestow upon Tan Sri Cheah his first honorary doctorate in 1993.
The award is especially significant to Tan Sri Cheah, a recognition from his alma mater. “Victoria University holds a special place in my heart,” he said to a hall of VU graduates. “I treasure my University experience so much that I invited my alma mater to partner with us at Sunway to offer the programmes which you are graduating from today.”
As a pioneer in the Malaysian educational landscape for twinning degree programmes, Victoria University was one of the first educational institutions that Sunway Education Group was affiliated with, stemming from Tan Sri Cheah’s educational experience at Victoria University. The Sunway Education Group and Victoria University’s 24-year academic partnership has seen the delivery of undergraduate business degrees and the postgraduate Master of Business Administration degree.
The partnership is one of Tan Sri Cheah’s many contributions to the field of education in Malaysia, and has seen over 4,000 students graduate from Sunway Colleges around Malaysia.
The Distinguished Alumni Award is awarded each year to recognise the outstanding achievements and contributions of a member of the Victoria University alumni in their chosen field of endeavour. Only one recipient is selected a year, based on several selection criteria including being recognised as a leader in their field, receiving formal recognition for their endeavours, demonstrating integrity and high ethical standards, and exemplifying the pursuit of excellence in everything they do.
Victoria University is ranked 56 in the world’s top universities aged under 50 in the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings.
