Tan Sri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah Among Six Conferred Malaysian Leadership Excellence Award

Tan Sri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah, Sunway Group founder and chairman, was conferred the Malaysian Institute of Management (MIM) Malaysian Leadership Excellence Award, by the DYMM Paduka Seri Sultan Perak Darul Ridzuan, Sultan Nazrin Muiziddin Shah, at the MIM’s 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner held at Shangri-la Hotel Kuala Lumpur last night.

Tan Sri Cheah received the award alongside five other distinguished personalities- Bank Negara Governor Tan Sri Zeti Akhtar Aziz; Chairman of AmBank Group Tan Sri Azman Hashim; secretary-general of Ministry of International Trade and Industry Datuk Dr. Rebecca Fatima Sta Maria; Top Glove Chairman, Tan Sri Lim Wee Chai; and CEO of Siemens Malaysia, Prakash Chandran.

The Malaysian Leadership Excellence Award was created specially to commemorate the organisation’s 50th anniversary, and recognises individuals with indisputable track records of successfully translating knowledge and management strategies into practices that benefit the country.

The awardees were handpicked by a prestigious panel of judges comprising Malaysia’s top leaders, including MIM Chairman and Farlim Group Executive Director, Datuk Seri Iqbal Rawther; MIM President and Genting Board Member Tun Haji Mohammed Hanif

Omar; Petronas Board Member, Tan Sri Haji Megat Najmuddin; CEO of Star Publications Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai; Pagoh Member of Parliament, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin; and CEO of New Straits Times Press, Datuk Mohammad Azlan Abdullah.

Tan Sri Cheah was awarded for his outstanding contributions in the fields of philanthropy and promotion of arts and culture, an exemplary precedent as a corporate leader. Tan Sri Cheah is the Founding Trustee of the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, Malaysia’s largest education-focused social enterprise. The Foundation has disbursed more than RM210 million in scholarships to facilitate quality education for thousands of deserving students who will contribute to building the nation’s future.

Tan Sri Cheah has grown the Sunway Group from its humble beginnings into an RM13 billion property-construction conglomerate which has presence across 50 locations worldwide. Sunway is one of Malaysia’s 100 Leading Graduate Employers as voted by students and graduates across all of Malaysia.

Sunway Group corporate advisor Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. R. V. Navaratnam, who is also MIM General Council Member and MIM Court of Emeritus Fellow received special recognition during the gala dinner. Tan Sri Navaratnam along with seven other MIM members were bestowed Confrere D’ Honneur for their generous commitment of time, support and inspiration to the Institute.
