Recognised for his outstanding management skills in leading Sunway Group to achieve great success in various industries including real estate, construction, education and healthcare

Kuala Lumpur, September 5 ~ Sunway Group founder and chairman Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah AO, has been conferred the Malaysian Institute of Management (MIM) Court of Emeritus Fellow, the highest grade of membership accorded to outstanding individuals who have contributed significantly towards the field of management for a host of industries in the country.

He received his conferment from MIM President Tun Hj Mohammed Hanif Omar and Permaisuri Johor Raja Zarith Sofiah binti Almarhum Sultan Idris Shah in conjunction with the 28th Tunku Abdul Rahman Lecture today.

In his speech, Tun Hj Mohammed Hanif Omar said, “We can no longer operate on the premise of traditional way of business. Today’s dynamism demands a global value system, beyond the myopias of our own cultures and traditions. And so, we must develop leaders with strong values.”

Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah’s voluminous accomplishments and passion in championing sustainability, education and healthcare is an inspiration to many; especially the next generation of leaders. Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah said, “I am humbled to be conferred this award. I accept it as a recognition of the efforts of the whole team in making Sunway what it is today.”

Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah joins some of Malaysia’s most distinguished business icons as a Court of Emeritus Fellow including Robert Kuok Hock Nien (Council Member of Eminent Persons), Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Mohd Hassan Marican (Petronas past President and chief executive officer), YM Tunku Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Ahmad Tunku Yahaya (past-Sime Darby Group chief executive officer), Tan Sri Dato’ Azman Hashim (AmBank chairman), and YBM Tan Sri Tengku Razaleigh Tengku M Hamzah (Petronas founding chairman and chief executive).

Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah is the founder and chairman of Sunway Group, one of Malaysia’s largest conglomerates with core interests in real estate, construction, education and healthcare that comprises three public-listed companies in its stable – Sunway Group, Sunway REIT and Sunway Construction, which has a collective market capitalisation of approximately RM 17 billion. Powered by a sustainable business model, and its build-own-operate capabilities, the Sunway Group aims to advance the United Nation 2030 Sustainable Development Goal in the region.

Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah is also the founding trustee of Malaysia’s largest education-focused social enterprise, the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation (JCF). Fulfilling his personal life philosophy to “aspire to inspire before I expire,” he had transferred, in perpetuity, the equity and rights of Sunway Education Group’s (SEG) educational institutions, worth in excess of RM1 billion today, into the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation. Rooted in his conviction of the power of education in breaking the cycle of poverty and in raising standards of living, the JCF will have disbursed scholarships and grants worth RM400 million by the end of the year, touching and transforming the lives of thousands of future leaders and global citizens. It is Tan Sri Cheah’s personal aim to award RM1 billion worth of scholarships in his lifetime.

Besides being conferred 10 honorary doctorates by leading universities worldwide, Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah has also been recognised twice as Forbes Asia Hero of Philanthropy in 2009 and 2015 respectively. He was appointed Council Member of United Nations (UNSDSN) in 2013; a member of Harvard’s Global Advisory Council in 2014 and a member of the Committee of University Resources at Harvard in 2015. He was also appointed Officer of the Order of Australia (“AO”) by the Prime Minister of Australia for his contribution in building bilateral relations between Malaysia and Australia through education, among a long-growing list of accomplishments.
