Pusing, Perak, 11 January – Sunway Group founder and chairman Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah AO and Menteri Besar Perak YAB Dato’ Seri Ahmad Faizal Dato’ Azumu, today launched SJK(C) Gunong Hijau’s new Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah Administrative Building.

The new administrative building is an expansion of a three-storey building named after the school Board of Governors chairman, Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah, which was completed in 2003. The new expansion and school upgrading amounted to a total of RM1 million, which was funded by JCF and the school. The construction of the 7,300 sq ft administrative building commenced in early 2018 and was completed late last year.

The new administrative building will house a bigger staff room, admin offices, additional meeting rooms, a computer lab and a library. Since 1997, Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah and JCF have donated RM5 million to the school’s development and enhancement.

Established in 1907, the more than a century-old Chinese primary school is the larger of the only two primary schools in the small town of Pusing and supports close to two-thirds of Pusing’s entire primary school-going population. SJK(C) Gunong Hijau currently has more than 500 students and teachers.

In his speech, YAB Dato’ Seri Ahmad commended Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah’s commitment to sustainably progress his home state.

“Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah’s single-minded dedication to sustainably progress Perak is an example to all. The integrated green township of Sunway City Ipoh has contributed to Perak’s socio-economic growth for decades. It has created thousands of jobs, contributed to Perak’s economic wealth through tourism, protected Perak’s natural resources, and improved lives for the people of Perak by leaps and bounds. His many contributions to schools in Perak has ensured that thousands of school children have the education they need to create a better future for themselves,” said Dato’ Seri Ahmad.

In a heartfelt speech, the school Board of Governor’s deputy chairman and organising chairman, Dato’ Lee Kon Yin said, “It would not be exaggeration to say that Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah’s family has been the biggest contributor to Pusing’s survival post the collapse of the tin-mining industry in the early 1980s.”

“Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah’s father, Dato’ Cheah Fah started in the 80s with building a staircase connection from old canteen library. Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah continued on this tradition by building a multipurpose hall for the school in 1998, three-storey building for classrooms in 2003, and following that, a new administrative block for us.”

“Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah had been very committed to help our school since 1997, and since then has donated RM5 million, of which the latest funding came from JCF. In a small town like Pusing, which had experienced dramatic socio-economic deterioration post the tin-mining era; good education is of extreme importance. Without good education, some of the children of Pusing who need it the most will not be able to escape the cycle of poverty,” he added.

The Pusing-born Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah is the founder of one of Malaysia’s largest conglomerate, Sunway Group which has a combined market capitalisation of close to RM14.5 billion.

In 2010, Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah established The Jeffrey Cheah Foundation which continues the mandate of the Sunway Education Trust which was established in 1997. The Jeffrey Cheah Foundation has disbursed a total of more than RM400 million in scholarships as of 2018, and has donated close to RM20 million for school upgrades to seven schools nationwide benefitting tens of thousands of students across the country.

Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah has been named Asia’s Heroes of Philanthropy by Forbes magazine twice, and last year, New York Times has attributed Ipoh’s tourism transformation to Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah.
