Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah Awarded Rotary Club Top Honours 2012

For His Role In Leadership & Development Of Education & Research In Malaysia

Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah, AO received the Rotary Club Honorary Gold Award from HRH Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah ibni Almarhum Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah at the Rotary Research Gold Medal Awards.

The award was presented to him in recognition of his leadership and development of education and research in Malaysia. The last time Rotary Club KL presented this award was nine years ago in 2003. Therefore it is a prestigious award indeed!

“I am very passionate about Education and I aspire to inspire before I expire. I take my role in education very seriously and hope to make a difference”, says Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah.

Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah is the Founder and Chairman of the Sunway Group. He is also the founder of Sunway Education Group; Founding Chancellor of Sunway University; and Founding Trustee of the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation.

In 2010, he had transferred his ownership of all five schools : Sunway University, Sunway College, Monash University Sunway Campus, Sunway International School and the Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences; estimated at RM700 million, to the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, which aims to safeguard the institutions for the purpose of providing and sustaining quality education for present and future generations of students for all deserving students, regardless of their socio-economic backgrounds.

Since inception, Jeffrey Cheah Foundation (JCF) had presented over RM80mil scholarships to more than 11,000 bright and needy students.

“Giving back to society by providing quality education to deserving Malaysian students is also my personal vision. Hence the formation of JCF to fulfill the vision to perpetuate the cause of bringing quality education to future generations of diligent and deserving Malaysian students”, adds Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah.

In Dec 2011, Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah was appointed by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, to Malaysia’s education panel, to work with other corporate leaders and the government on the National Education System Evaluation panel that spearheads the improvement of the quality of education in the country.

Through the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah recently sponsored RM150,000 to Teach for Malaysia towards assisting the organization in achieving its mission to reduce the gap between rural and urban schools in the country recently. He had demonstrated his personal commitment to the cause by teaching a class in SMK Puchong, Petaling Perdana.
