Bandar Sunway – The magical land of Askabar took to a brand new dimension at the gala premiere of Aladdin The Musical at Sunway Lagoon. The musical performed at the Amphitheatre @ Sunway Lagoon entertained audiences with an abundance of surprises from a hip-hop genie to the use of 3D glasses. Yes. 3D glasses at the musical theatre production.
With an interesting play on cutting-edge lighting and stage effects, the set of Aladdin The Musical leapt out to the audience and enveloped them in the mystical land of Askabar. From flying scenes to stunning pyrotechnics and even snow, the dramatic sound and visual display heightened the senses.
“We are proud to say that for the first time ever in performing arts theatre, a musical stage set has gone 3D. Nowhere else in region and perhaps the world, will you be able to find a stage production with a theatrical stage set equipped with 3D backgrounds and stage props. While this is a West End production, I am proud to say that this stage set is a product of Malaysian ingenuity and creativity,” said Aaron Soo, Chief Executive Officer of Sunway Lagoon and Executive Producer of Aladdin The Musical.
Aladdin The Musical tells the favourite tale of a boy’s adventure from street rat to Prince, when he is discovered to be ‘the diamond in the rough’ by Jafar, the evil vizier to the bubbly and lovable Sultan. With the help of a magic lamp, a flying carpet and a jovial ‘rapping’ Genie, Aladdin wrestles against the odds to win the heart of Princess Jasmine while he ingeniously uses good to triumph over evil.
This extravagant West End production at the Amphitheatre @ Sunway Lagoon will add a modern, musical twist to its traditional stage play. Integrating contemporary pop music with the classic storyline, Aladdin The Musical is a production that the whole family will enjoy.
Audiences can expect to see familiar characters such as Aladdin, Princess Jasmine, The Sultan, Jafar, Slave of the Ring and of course The Genie of the Lamp himself. The six principal characters will be played by performers who hail from London’s famous West End. They will be joined by an international ensemble of dancers, fire-eaters and stilt-walkers. There will even be special guest performers from the Wildlife Park @ Sunway Lagoon.
“Aladdin The Musical @ Sunway Lagoon has a lot of comedic elements which makes a wonderful year-end show for the entire family. The six principal cast members are all as enthusiastic as they are talented. Visitors should gear themselves up for a high-energy performance on stage set unlike any other. With the 3D moving stage set, we are putting a whole new meaning to ‘breaking down the 4th wall’,” said Chris Colby, Director of Aladdin The Musical.
