1974 – 1983

In 1974, the discovery of a tin-mining wasteland was found, and by 1980, a transformative vision emerged. This initiative aimed to repurpose the once-exploited tin-mining area, leading to a meaningful and sustainable transformation. The goal was not only to rejuvenate the land but also make a lasting positive impact on the environment and community.

1984 – 1993

Three key construction works were performed in this early period of time: Sunway Lagoon, Sunway University and Menara Sunway were all completed by 1993. These achievements highlight key milestones in the establishment of Sunway’s prominent theme park, educational institution, and centralised corporate hub.

1994 – 2003

Sunway City Kuala Lumpur transformed significantly through several key developments. The Sunway Resort Hotel (1996), Sunway Pyramid Mall (1997), Monash University Malaysia (1998), and Sunway Medical Centre (1999) collectively boosted the city’s economy in hospitality, retail, education, and healthcare.

2004 – 2013

Sunway made significant strides in aligning sustainability with profitability by incorporating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles. Key highlights include the establishment of the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation in 2010, Sunway City KL as Malaysia’s First Green Township in 2012, Sunway Pinnacle (a 27-story MSC-accredited office building) in 2013, and the endowment of the Jeffrey Cheah Professorship at Harvard University.

2014 – NOW

Sunway underwent a transformative phase with academic collaborations with Oxford and Cambridge, infrastructure advancements such as BRT, and healthcare initiatives, including Sunway Medical Centre Velocity. Expanding with projects like Sunway Velocity Mall and Sunway iLABS, Sunway embraced sustainability through initiatives like Sunway FutureX. By 2022, Sunway Resort Hotel became Asia’s premier destination, and the city became home to the UN-SDSN Asia Headquarters.
