    Established as a single-tower facility in 1999, the group’s flagship Sunway Medical Centre in Sunway City Kuala Lumpur has grown to become Malaysia’s largest private teaching and research hospital, with a capacity of 1,100 beds. It is also the first triple accredited private hospital in Malaysia, through the US-based Joint Commission International (JCI), the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS) and the Malaysian Society for Quality in Health (MSQH).

This relationship deepens the following year with the establishment of the Jeffrey Cheah Professorial Fellowships at Brasenose College and the Scholars-in-Residence programme to foster academic exchanges in perpetuity.

  19. SOUTHEAST ASIA’S FIRST ELEVATED BUS RAPID TRANSIT

    SOUTHEAST ASIA’S FIRST ELEVATED BUS RAPID TRANSIT

    Sunway City Kuala Lumpur is the pioneering city in Southeast Asia to launch the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) services on a dedicated 5.4-kilometre elevated track. A public-private partnership between Prasarana Malaysia and Sunway, the BRT system features a fleet of electric-powered buses serving seven stations across the city. Its track strategically connects to two major public railways – the KTM and LRT.

    Academic ties between the University of Cambridge and the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation begin with the establishment of the Jeffrey Cheah Professorial Fellowships in Gonville & Caius College and the Jeffrey Cheah Scholar-in-Residence programme. This partnership expanded in 2017 with the establishment of the Sunway Clinical Research Centre in Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City Kuala Lumpur, the first regional partner of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine.

    The Jeffrey Cheah Foundation has gifted $20 million to the United Nation Sustainable Development Solutions Network (UN-SDSN) over the past decade, with half of the donation used for the establishment of the Jeffrey Sachs Center on Sustainable Development at Sunway University. It is one of only a few entities of its kind delivering impactful research, education and policy recommendations on sustainable development in the region.

    Sunway reaffirms its commitment to the sustainable development agenda with a pledge to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, with an interim target to halve emission intensity by 2030. Across the group, business divisions are committed to progressively reducing greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 45% from 2010 levels by 2030, in line with the targets recommended by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
