Sunway emerged as the biggest winner at British Malaysia Chamber of Commerce (BMCC) Business Excellence Award with two big wins. Sunway Group Founder and Chairman and the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation Founding Trustee Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah was conferred UK-Malaysia Business Personality Award while Sunway Medical Centre won the UK-Malaysia Partnership Award.

The Business Excellence Award, which was held for the second time, aims to recognise the best of British and Malaysian businesses. Established in 1963, the BMCC has been driven by the sole ordinance of advancing bilateral trade relations between the United Kingdom and Malaysia. Over the past five decades, the BMCC has been a catalyst in providing Malaysian-based businesses with networking and exposure, knowledge exchange and bilateral trading support services. Today, the BMCC has firmly rooted itself as one of Southeast Asia’s most prolific Chambers.

Finance Minister YB Lim Guan Eng, Ministry of International Trade and Industry of Malaysia Deputy Minister YB Dr Ong Kian Ming, British High Commissioner HE Charles Hay, BMCC Chairman Andrew Sill and BMCC Patron Tun Musa Hitam were also present at the event.

Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah – UK-Malaysia Business Personality Award

The UK-Malaysia Business Personality Award honours individuals who through their UK-Malaysian business interests have made a positive impact in their company, the overall economy, and contributed to the championing of business ties between both countries.

Receiving the only individual award of the evening, Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah said, “All my personal efforts and those of Sunway Education Group and the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation are focused on a single goal. That mission is to enhance the quality and standards of education and healthcare in Malaysia and in the region as a whole. Our many collaborations with the various educational institutions in the UK has been inspirational and truly rewarding. We want to work with the best, and to learn from the best. I wish to express my deepest gratitude to our friends and partners in the UK for helping us create a better tomorrow for our children.”

The founder has cemented partnerships between Sunway education and healthcare divisions with UK’s top healthcare and education institutions such as Universities of Cambridge, Oxford and Lancaster, as well as the Royal Papworth and Addenbrooke’s hospitals. Sunway-TES CAE is the only tuition provider with Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) and has obtained full accreditation from the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) in the country.

Sunway Medical Centre – UK-Malaysia Partnership Award

The UK-Malaysia Partnership Award honours an individual, team or company that has successfully partnered with the UK or Malaysian counterpart. The joint-venture collaboration and synergies created through this partnership will have driven exceptional results and shown significant value-creation; capitalising on the best of UK and Malaysia expertise through a seamless partnership.

Sunway Group Healthcare Services Managing Director Lau Beng Long said, “It is truly an honour for us to win this award. We are very delighted that our deep partnership with leading institutions in the United Kingdom has not only enabled us to share knowledge, expertise and research, but also help raise the standards of healthcare in the region.”

Sunway Medical Centre (SunMed) took home the UK-Malaysia Partnership Award. SunMed first partnered with the University of Cambridge, to set up a regional clinical research site – first of its kind in the world – in Malaysia. The collaboration also enabled Sunway Medical Centre to work with the University of Cambridge’s Health Partners, the Royal Papworth and Addenbrooke’s hospitals. The collaboration with the Royal Papworth hospital will be focused on heart and lung.

Sunway Medical Centre also recently embarked on a partnership with University of Cambridge and the Royal College of Physicians, London (RCP), to establish a series of jointly collaborated Continuous Medical Education (CME) seminars featuring the world’s most renowned specialists and cover latest trends and developments in acute and general medicine. These collaborations serve the objective of Sunway Medical Centre’s commitment towards improving patient care and treatment standards.
