Sunway Group has committed Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre as the first private large-scale vaccination centre for the Petaling district, as the country ramps up the National COVID-19 Immunisation programme (NCIP). The 150,000 sq ft convention centre opened its doors on March 10 and will be carrying out vaccinations for at least 1.8 million people, starting with frontline workers followed by residents in the Petaling district over the next 11 months until February 2022.
Following the National Immunisation Plan, the Centre will carry out vaccinations for healthcare workers in the government and private facilities as well as essential services from February to April 2021, remaining healthcare workers, essential workers and enforcers as well as senior citizens and high-risk groups from April to August 2021, with vaccinations for the community at large from August 2021 to February 2022.
As of March 12, some 1,400 frontline workers have been vaccinated. The vaccination is carried out by Petaling Health District Office with strict adherence to the SOPs, in small groups, with adequate social distancing. Free parking is provided for those coming to get vaccinated over the next 11 months.
Petaling District Disaster Management Committee said that Sunway Group’s commitment to nation building by offering the Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre as a vaccination centre is instrumental to helping our nation achieve the goal of 80% herd immunity in Malaysia.
“Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre has the ideal size, strategic location, and infrastructure support we need to ensure the smooth roll-out of the vaccinations. We are thankful to the Sunway Group for its prompt response in offering the convention centre as a vaccination hub and supporting the national immunisation programme,” said the Petaling District Disaster Management Committee.
Sunway Group deputy executive chairman Tan Sri Datuk Seri Razman M. Hashim said, “Sunway is committed to nation building by offering our convention centre in support of the 80% herd immunity in Malaysia, which will save lives and livelihoods and put us as back as a nation on the road to building back economic sustainability.”
Sunway has committed close to RM28 million in actual costs including associated costs for cleaning and sanitisation as well as opportunity costs, resulting from cancelled bookings made earlier by clients for the convention centre, in support of this national initiative.
This new CSR initiative is in addition to the RM34 million that we committed in various forms under our CSR programmes in 2020 when the pandemic hit our shores. This is yet another of our commitment to giving back to society and contributing to nation-building.
Sunway Group founder and chairman Tan Sri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah had also been appointed by the Prime Minister to serve on the Economic Action Council (EAC) which is a special task force to that takes additional necessary actions for the delivery of the nation’s Economic Stimulus Package in light of the Covid-19 outbreak.
Sunway’s Corporate Responsibility is encapsulated in the #SunwayforGood initiatives that pledge to promote sustainability and social responsibility efforts through three areas namely education, healthcare, and community enrichment, aligned with Sunway’s commitment to the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
The initiative is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being, Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities and Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
