Sunway Group concluded its nationwide, month-long #SunwayforGood Food Programme with a Malaysia Day celebration alongside around 2,000 members of the Desa Mentari community in Petaling Jaya.

Held as part of Sunway’s National Day and Malaysia Day campaign, Sejahtera Bersama, the programme reached more than 13,000 beneficiaries nationwide through five food-based initiatives, supporting Orang Asli communities, children, senior citizens and families in need.

The closing celebration at Dewan Serbaguna MBPJ was graced by YAM Tengku Zatashah binti Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj, who joined Sunway Group President Datuk Anuar Taib, together with volunteers and community partners, in distributing food to the community.

Senior representatives from the community partners included National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia Chairman Dato’ Dr Zaki Morad Mohd Zaher, Selangor Youth Community Chief Executive Officer Aiman Syafiq Nazri and Yayasan Kebajikan Negara Malaysia Chief Executive Officer Nordina Haron.

Representatives from across Sunway, including Sunway Resort Hotel, Sunway Theme Parks, Sunway University and Sunway Healthcare Group, were also present to support the celebration.

During the celebration, 2,000 burgers prepared by Burger Rumah Sahabat were distributed alongside ice cream, otak-otak, popiah and beverages contributed by Selangor Youth Community entrepreneurs. Children and families also took part in Malaysia Day activities including face painting, burger decoration, sustainable keychain-making and a football clinic.

The nationwide programme was bookended by two community celebrations in Selangor. It was launched at a National Day celebration held at Rumah Sahabat, Hulu Langat, on 29 August, where Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah Ibni Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj joined Sunway leaders, volunteers and NGO partners for a rewang, or communal food preparation session, and a tour of the rehabilitation centre.

Central to the programme was Burger Rumah Sahabat, a food business run by residents recovering from substance abuse and established with SAY’s support. Sunway purchased 5,000 burgers from the business, providing participating residents with income, market access and hands-on experience fulfilling a commercial order at scale.

Of these, 500 burgers were distributed at the launch, followed by 2,500 through the Burger Rumah Sahabat food truck and the final 2,000 at today’s closing celebration. The burgers were prepared by one community and shared with others, demonstrating how sustainable empowerment can enable communities to uplift one another.

Sunway Group Chief Brand Strategy Officer Nik Tasha Nik Kamaruddin said: “#SunwayforGood has always been about bringing Malaysians together to support communities in need. From Rumah Sahabat to Desa Mentari, this year’s programme has shown how nationwide collective action can create meaningful impact.

“Our partnership with Burger Rumah Sahabat also demonstrated how sustainable empowerment can enable one community to uplift another. Guided by our belief in Doing Well by Doing Good, we hope to continue working alongside our partners and communities to create opportunities and build a more inclusive society.”

Over the course of the month, the #SunwayforGood Food Programme comprised five initiatives and benefited more than 13,000 people nationwide, culminating in today’s Malaysia Day celebration at Desa Mentari. Among these initiatives were the distribution of dry groceries to households in need and the Sunway Meal Pack-a-Thon, which brought volunteers together to assemble and distribute meal packs nationwide.

The programme was carried out with Sunway’s partners, including Selangor Youth Community, Yayasan Kebajikan Negara, Malaysian Red Crescent Society, Kechara Soup Kitchen and Rise Against Hunger Malaysia.

While the #SunwayforGood Food Programme concluded at the celebration, Sunway’s relationship with the Desa Mentari community will continue through the Sunway-Desa Mentari Programme led by Sunway University.

Since 2014, #SunwayforGood has served as Sunway’s platform for community giving, bringing together employees, volunteers and partners to support underserved communities nationwide. Its initiatives are held throughout the year in conjunction with major Malaysian celebrations, including Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Deepavali, with this year’s programme extending to National Day and Malaysia Day. Guided by Sunway’s core values of Integrity, Humility and Excellence and its belief in Doing Well by Doing Good, #SunwayforGood has benefited thousands of people across the country.
