Sunway City Kuala Lumpur,17 August 2020

Sunway Group President Chew Chee Kin has been conferred the Darjah Kebesaran Panglima Setia Makhota (P.S.M.), carrying the title of “Tan Sri”, by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah in conjunction with His Majesty’s birthday.

The conferment took place in a ceremony held on August 17, 2020 at Istana Negara.

Chew graduated with a Bachelor of Economics (Honours) Degree from University of Malaya in 1974. In 1980, he attended the Program in Management Development at Harvard Business School.

He joined Sunway Group in 1981, and helmed the Group as President from 1999.

Alongside Sunway Group Founder and Chairman Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah, Chew steered Sunway’s growth to become one of Malaysia’s largest conglomerates with 13 business divisions with a market capitalisation of close to RM 17 billion as at end-2019. Sunway Group is now present in 50 locations worldwide.

In 2011, he led the merger between Sunway City Berhad and Sunway Holding Berhad. Since then, Sunway Berhad had more than doubled its revenue as of end-2019. In the same year, he was also conferred the Degree of Doctor of Laws Honoris Causa of Monash University.

Chew currently drives Sunway Group’s digital transformation agenda, accelerating the Group’s nation-building efforts to innovate for solutions for a sustainable future, in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

He stewards Sunway’s mission to transform Sunway Group’s flagship township Sunway City Kuala Lumpur into a model smart and sustainable city of the 21st century – a “living lab” for sustainable urban living in the future.

An advocate for quality education, Chew was instrumental in the development of Sunway University and Monash University Malaysia as well as the inception of Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, Malaysia’s largest education-focused social enterprise.

Also a Board Member of Monash University Malaysia, he has fostered strong bilateral relations between Sunway Education Group and Monash University.

He contributed strongly towards convincing Monash to open its first-ever foreign campus in Malaysia which, incidentally, was also the first-ever campus in Malaysia set up by a highly-ranked foreign university.

Chew is currently the Deputy Chairman of the Board of Governors of SJK (C) Chee Wen, Subang Jaya. He has actively helped raise several millions of ringgit for improvements of facilities at the school, and also those of several other vernacular schools.
