Kuching, Sarawak,06 July 2022

Sunway Healthcare Group (SHG) is expanding its footprint to serve the local population of Sabah and Sarawak, as well as patients from neighbouring countries, with two of its centres being established in Kuching – Sunway Traditional and Complementary Medicine (TCM) Centre and Sunway Fertility Centre. The launch of the two centres took place on 6th July 2022 at Canaan Square Business Hub, Jalan Stutong Baru in Kuching, Sarawak.

Officiated by YB Dato Sri Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian, Deputy Premier of Sarawak, other guests of honour at the launching ceremony for the centres were Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah, Founder and Chairman of Sunway Group; Dato’ Sri Idris Jala, Co-Chairman of Sunway Group, Tan Sri Datuk Seri Razman Hashim, Deputy Chairman of Sunway Group; Professor Elizabeth Lee, CEO of Sunway Education Group, Dr Lim Ren Jye, Medical Director of Sunway TCM Centre and Ms Woon Ming Ming, Chief Executive Officer of Sunway Fertility Centre.

Sunway TCM Centre and Sunway Fertility Centre are part of Sunway Healthcare Group, one of the leading integrated healthcare networks in the country. Its flagship Sunway Medical Centre, the largest private tertiary and quaternary hospital, is situated in Sunway City Kuala Lumpur. SHG also comprises a 2nd hospital in Sunway Velocity KL as well as ancillary and supportive healthcare services in its ambulatory care clinics, home care and traditional & complementary medicine offerings.

Speaking at the launch, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah expressed Sunway’s commitment to providing quality and world-class healthcare and education.

“Sunway is deeply committed to advancing the sustainable development agenda in the region. We have fully embraced the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs, which were adopted by the United Nations in 2015. Sunway’s latest venture into Sarawak by our healthcare arm is in line with this commitment to the SDGs, in particular SDG 3, which is ‘good health and well-being’.

Malaysia has growing reputation as a top destination for medical tourism in the region, and it is encouraging to have the support of the Sarawak government as a strategic partner in our endeavour. Our efforts at Sunway are driven by the conviction that realising the 17 SDGs is not the responsibility of Governments alone. Building a sustainable future requires the commitment of all elements of society – the private sector, academia, civil society, and, of course, every single individual,” Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah elaborated.

The two centres in Kuching aim to deliver easier access of quality healthcare to the people in Sarawak, Sabah, Brunei and neighbouring countries. According to Dr Lim Ren Jye, Medical Director of Sunway TCM Centre, Malaysians in the Borneo States have been travelling to Sunway City Kuala Lumpur for TCM treatments and procedures. Similarly, Sunway Fertility Centre’s in our flagship medical centre have been treating patients for infertility issues, including pre-implantation genetic testing, according to Ms Woon Ming Ming, Chief Executive Officer of Sunway Fertility Centre.

Dr Lim elaborated that the use of herbal remedies and traditional therapies have been found to complement and optimise the recovery process in treatment of diseases. “TCM is fundamentally all about creating balance in the body in order to maintain health and wellness. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), traditional medicine has been an integral health resource for many centuries in communities around the world, and it is still a mainstay for a number of population due to cultural and historical influences that have been proven to bring about benefits”.

“With Malaysia positioned to be a fertility hub for Asia, our new fertility centre will be able to fulfill the increasing demands of couples who are trying to conceive,” said Ms Woon. “During our recent visit to the office of the Minister of Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, she shared her concerns over the declining trend of birth rates in Sarawak since 2019. I am confident that our state-of-the-art fertility centre supported by our resident fertility specialist, Dr Edawati Dahrawi Edrus, is well-equipped to provide comprehensive treatment options for couples struggling to conceive”.

Sunway TCM Centre and Sunway Fertility Centre offer services that are complementary, where evidence-based TCM methods fundamentally helps in the success of western fertility treatments. With this synergy, the two centres aim to deliver holistic care with better quality, safety and efficacy to patients.

Sunway’s first foray into Sarawak was through the establishment of the Sunway College Kuching in 2007. Fully owned and governed by the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, Sunway College Kuching is part of the ever-growing Sunway Education Group.

To date, Sunway College Kuching has disbursed almost RM 1 million in scholarships through the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation to make quality education accessible to all communities in Sarawak.
