Marginalised groups in Malaysia may have many physical needs, but deeper still is their need to be accepted by the public and to have a sense of belonging.

Taking heed from the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to reduce inequality as well as eradicating poverty, Sunway Property collaborated with 11 underprivileged organisations to launch #SunwayClosesTheGap, its Social Inclusion and Sustainability Initiative at Sunway Velocity Mall early this year.

The initiative was aimed at raising public awareness on the gaps in society, and to source for essential items needed by the beneficiaries to be better prepared to face the year ahead.

The 11 beneficiary homes were Yayasan Sunbeams Homes, Persatuan Rumah Kanak-kanak Ini Disayangi Selangor, Kenosis Home, Trinity Community Children Home, Ray of Hope Children’s Home, Chin’s Women Organisation, Shepherd’s Centre Foundation, Pertubuhan Kebajikan Ehsan Ash-Shakur, Rumah Victory Elderly Home, Persatuan Kebajikan Teratak Shifa and Rainbow Home.

Many a time, we are tied up with our daily commitments and forget to care about these communities around us. Through this initiative, we hope everyone can take a moment to reflect on the gap in the lives of our fellow community members, and consider extending our support to them in the many ways that we can. – SARENA CHEAH, Managing Director of Property, Development Division for, Malaysia and Singapore at Sunway Berhad –

At the end of the initiative, Sunway collected a variety of essential items for the 11 homes including food, clothing, electrical appliances, furniture and household goods.
