Yet another feather in the cap for Sunway’s CSR efforts
Sunway recently received an award from Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin at the Department of Social Welfare Malaysia’s 75th anniversary celebration.
The award is a prestigious recognition for the social impact the Group’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts has brought to the local community.
Built on the foundation of service above self and reaching out to the underserved communities, we actively work towards enhancing the lives of others through our three key pillars of education, healthcare and community enrichment through our various CSR initiatives.
At the 75th anniversary celebration, our collective efforts were acknowledged by the Department of Social Welfare Malaysia, where we were prestigiously awarded in recognition of the impact our CSR efforts had brought upon the community.
Sunway Group founder and chairman Tan Sri Sir Jeffrey Cheah received the award from Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin at the ceremony held in Putrajaya International Convention Centre.
“We are humbled by the recognition. This award goes to our family at Sunway who work tirelessly to not only innovate for long-term solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges, but also to reach out to those who need it the most at every step of the way, so that no one will be left behind on the path to progress. The goals of the UN-SDGs are not the work of governments alone – it is everyone’s responsibility. We are all in this together.” ~ said Tan Sri Sir Jeffrey Cheah
Continuing the good work
To date, our #SunwayforGood initiatives has impacted over half a million Malaysians across the country, with a greater goal to double the number and touch one million lives by 2030.
All of our initiatives are underscored by our commitment to advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN-SDGs).
Leading up to Sunway’s 50th anniversary in 2024, we have also set out to fulfil four pledges starting this year, which include:
- Build and refurbish at least 50 libraries through the Sunway READ programme
- Pack one million meals to undernourished communities
- Set up 50 urban farms for 50 orphanages
- Provide basic health screening in partnership with the National Kidney Foundation for 50 Orang Asal communities
Since the onset of the pandemic in 2020, Sunway Group has committed more than RM50 million in aid, which includes more than RM12 million to support government healthcare institutions and professionals, RM20 million to provide retailers rent-free days during the first MCO, and more than RM28 million to support the current National COVID-19 Immunisation Programme (NCIP).
To further support the ongoing NCIP, we also recently committed Sunway Pyramid Convention as the first private large-scale vaccination centre for the Petaling district, rent-free. The 150,000 sq. ft. convention centre opened its doors on 10 March and will oversee the vaccinations for over 1.8 million people until February 2022.
Up north, we have also sponsored RM1 million to set up the #SunwayforGood Anjung Kasih Yayasan Kebajikan Negara for Hospital Seberang Jaya in Penang. The sponsorship went towards providing temporary accommodation for family members of the underserved community that are accompanying their loved ones receiving treatment at government hospitals.
Last but not least, Sunway is embarking on its Hari Raya CSR campaign for the upcoming festive season, which aims to reach out to a total of 20,000 beneficiaries nationwide.
All of these commitments were carried out to help Malaysians flatten the curve and alleviate the hardships of those most impacted by the pandemic such as frontline workers, small businesses as well as families and individuals from the B40 communities.
