We recognise that Sunway’s business activities will leave an impact throughout the value chain. We want to rise to the call in reducing environmental and social impacts for a more sustainable future. That is why we developed the goal of advocating a responsible value chain, which underpins our net zero by 2050 aspiration.

Alongside our tenants, customers and suppliers, we work towards reducing Sunway’s Scope 3 emissions by establishing green lease partnerships. Sunway REIT is among the first companies to implement this in Malaysia and we are proud to be a corporate standard bearer when it comes to doing sustainable and responsible business.

We require suppliers to provide information related to their environmental management systems and workplace standards as part of the evaluation in selecting our partners. This helps us review any potential environmental and social risks associated with the business activities of the vendors we work with.

We are increasingly raising awareness among our suppliers by indicating a preference to work with vendors adopting the best practices outlined in Sunway’s Sustainable Procurement Policy. This allows us to effectively encourage suppliers in minimising their negative environmental and social footprint, and to benchmark their sustainability practices against the industry, ultimately bringing all involved to a more sustainable future, together.

We ensure that our commitment to our people extends far beyond fair working hours, equitable wages and equality regardless of race, gender or background, as outlined in the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights as well as and UN Global Impact (UNGC) Principles, of which we have been a signatory since 2012.

The UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights are a set of guidelines for States and companies to protect, respect and remedy human rights abuses committed in business operations. According to the Guiding Principles, businesses must seek to prevent or mitigate any adverse impacts related to their operations, products or services, even if these impacts have been carried out by suppliers or business partners.

From our frontline workers and back-end employees to on-ground staff and senior leaders, Sunway’s Occupational Health, Safety and Environment (OHSE) framework have detailed guidelines and programmes in place to ensure we provide a safe and healthy work environment for all our people.

To shape a dynamic and high-performing workforce, we regularly organise learning and development programmes to bolster the abilities and skill sets of our employees. These include soft skills enhancement, talent development, and various functional and technical training programmes.

But more than anything, we want to create a culture where our people can bring their best self to work and enjoy doing so because their overall well-being from the aspects of physical, mental, and social are taken care of.

In addition to a safe workplace, we want to engender a nurturing and cultivating environment where Sunway’s talent can continuously learn and grow into the leaders of tomorrow.

The Sunway Leadership Curriculum encompasses five categories, catering for all levels of employees from non-executives, individual contributors, frontline managers, middle managers, to senior management. Depending on their roles, our people are developed in the areas of Self & Supervisory Leadership, Personal Leadership, People Leadership, Business Leadership, and Group Leadership.

Sunway continues to keep the health and safety of our people front and centre, reflecting values that have been deeply inculcated within our DNA since day one.

Throughout the years, we have introduced a range of systemic changes in our governance structure on occupational health and safety, evolving in alignment with national goals. This journey culminated in Sunway’s OSHE best practices in place, which were formalised into the Group OHSE Policy in 2021. This sets a well-defined roadmap to drive OHSE-related dialogues and efforts across the Group. Guided by the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) 1994, the policy outlines the roles and responsibilities of every staff across all levels, as well as establishing international best practices as the foundation of our safety culture.

In the Property Development division, we adopt the Sunway Quality Merit System (SQMS) to assess the quality of our product workmanship at our ongoing construction projects. The SQMS is an internal assessment conducted based on the sampling of active trades during the construction of a project’s main building. We aim to achieve 80% and above in the assessment for every project, which requires close monitoring and control of the quality of work for structure, architecture and mechanical and electrical (M&E) installation throughout a project.

In the Quarry division, we utilise Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) reporting, a web-based tool for laboratory users to enter and prepare test reports. The reports are accessible online, while the captured data is used for plant quality and operator performance analysis.

For some five decades, Sunway has been an integral part of the Malaysian community. As we celebrate Sunway’s 50th anniversary in 2024, we aspire to continue playing an essential role in the nation’s development, in line with our commitment to nation-building.
