Sunway and Yayasan Sin Chew bring CNY cheer to elderly and single mothers
While Malaysians gear up for the upcoming Chinese New Year festivities, Sunway Group and Yayasan Sin Chew came together to bring about festive cheer to more than 200 senior citizens and single mothers from around Klang Valley.
The senior citizens – approximately 60 to 90 years old – from six homes including old folks and single mothers from government flats gathered at Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa to re-create “reunion moments” in conjunction with Chinese New Year with the management teams and some 120 volunteers from Sunway Group and Yayasan Sin Chew.
The annual initiative in its fifth year now, is part of Sunway Group’s Light of Hope programme and was themed “Creating Reunion Moments” this year to foster the spirit of togetherness and to spend meaningful time with the underserved community during the festive season.
The guests were greeted by a joyous “God of Prosperity” upon arrival who welcomed them with his jolly countenance and avuncular presence. The delighted guests were then ushered to a special cooking workshop where they cooked up a storm, guided by expert chefs at the Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa and the volunteers from Sunway Group.
Together, the participants created three traditional Chinese New Year dishes, a “yee sang” platter, a “hou xi fatt choy” dish and “tang yuen”, which were handpicked for their symbolic representation of well-wishes and abundance for the coming new year.
Ms Siew Nyoke Chow, CEO of Yayasan Sin Chew; Puan Sri Susan Cheah, EXCO Member, Sunway Group; and Sunway’s senior management representatives then joined in for a lively lunch.
“Sunway remains committed to enriching the lives of the communities we serve especially the less privileged through our annual Light of Hope initiative, where we gather in the spirit of togetherness and spread some love and cheer during festive seasons,” said Puan Sri Susan Cheah, EXCO member of Sunway Group.
Post-lunch, everyone sat back for an entertaining karaoke session where Sunway talents displayed their vocal prowess much to everyone’s delight.
The happy and satiated guests went home with goodie bags, ang pows, toiletries and groceries which were contributed by Yayasan Sin Chew and Sunway Group staff.
The Light of Hope programme is part of Sunway’s corporate responsibility initiatives under the C.A.R.E. (Community Aid, Reach-Out and Enrichment) projects. Over the years, Sunway Group has celebrated major festive seasons with more than 80,000 people from all walks of life across Malaysia.
