Bags three awards, first to receive prestigious industry award three times

Leading property-construction group, Sunway Berhad’s construction unit has been accorded Builder of the Year by Malaysian Construction Industry Excellence Awards (MCIEA) 2013. In addition to Sunway Construction bagging the Builder of the Year Award, Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah, AO, Founder and Chairman of Sunway Group, was also presented with the Prominent Player Award, while Kwan Foh Kwai, Managing Director of Sunway Construction, was named CEO of the Year.

Minister of Works, Datuk Haji Fadillah bin Haji Yusof presented the awards to the winners at a gala dinner held at the Majestic Hotel recently.

Sunway bagged the most number of awards at the ceremony and its construction division, is the first construction company to have won the Builder of the Year award three times, first in 2003, then 2005, and in 2013. The MCIEA awards are regarded as a premier accolade for all round excellence in the Malaysian construction industry. The Builder of the Year award is presented to a Grade G7 contractor who has demonstrated overall excellence in company’s performance and project implementation.

The winners are selected after a series of detailed evaluations by three independent panels of assessors appointed by Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) Malaysia, and are among the highest level in MCIEA. CIDB is a statutory body under Minister of Works, Malaysia and was established in July 1994 to coordinate all activities in the construction industry and increase its competitiveness.

“We are honoured to receive these awards, as we are celebrating Sunway Group’s 40th Anniversary this year. Sunway Construction has always seen itself as a stalwart contributor to Malaysia’s growth and progress, and we hope to be able to contribute even more to nation-building efforts in the coming years,” said Founder and Chairman of Sunway Group, Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah, AO.

Sunway Construction, to date, has received close to 40 national and international recognitions for excellent industry performance, management, safety and health, as well as quality. Sunway Construction’s outstanding construction order book is in excess of RM3.4 billion as of July 31, 2014, and its current projects include the Mass Rapid Transit Package V4, Light Rail Transit – Kelana Jaya extension line, Malaysia’s first elevated Bus Rapid Transit – Sunway line, Afiniti Urban Wellness Centre, KLCC North East Carpark and KLCC Package 2 (piling and sub-structure works for a proposed mixed commercial development).

This innovative and integrated approach to managing design and costs through digitisation of information models ensures better streamlining of design, scheduling and fabrication processes, and is seen by the Group to be a competitive advantage going forward.

The construction unit had recently announced that it is seeking to list on Main Market of Bursa Malaysia Securities Berhad in the second quarter of 2015.
