Deputy Minister of Education II, YB Kamalanathan A/L Panchanathan and Sunway Group’s EXCO member, Puan Sri Datin Seri Dr. Susan Cheah feted some high-achieving underprivileged children from Hulu Selangor for the Diwali celebrations recently.

Aligned with Sunway Group’s C.A.R.E (Community Aid, Reach-out and Enrichment) projects, which is one of the pillars of Sunway’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts to enrich the lives of the community, the Group graciously invited 100 underprivileged students who are also high achievers from SJK (T) Kuala Kubu Bharu, SRJK (T) Sungai Choh and SRJK (T) Bukit Beruntung in Hulu Selangor, to join in the Diwali celebrations. The Year 1 to Year 6 students were selected for this excursion as a form of recognition and acknowledgement of their accomplishments in school.

As part of Sunway’s “Light of Hope” initiative to reach out to the underprivileged during major festive occasions, Sunway Group through its staff club, Kelab Sosial Sunway (KSS) encouraged staff to inculcate the spirit of volunteerism by sponsoring a child at RM100, which entitled them to stationery and grocery gift bags.

Puan Sri Datin Seri Dr. Susan Cheah shared that the ‘Light of Hope’ initiative under Sunway’s CSR efforts aims to reach out and touch the lives of the underprivileged yearly during major festive occasions, and to give them a memorable and joyful experience. She added that the event enabled staff to demonstrate and inculcate one of Sunway Group’s core values, humility, by lending a helping hand to support the underprivileged in this festival of lights and joy.

Sunway City (SC) kick-started its celebrations of Diwali by putting up the much anticipated show lights with the colourful peacock motif and Lotus Rangoli. YB Kamalanathan painted the ceramic tiles and lighted up the kolam at Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall themed “The Passage of Diwali”, followed by another lighting of kolam at Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa “An Illuminating Deepavali”, to symbolise the celebration of Diwali at SRC with his wife, Shobana A/P Subramaniam.

Puan Sri Datin Seri Dr. Susan Cheah, YB Kamalanathan and his wife presented the children grocery hampers containing fortified drink, milk powder and cordial, as well as school kits with brand new school essentials which included stationery, school bags, water bottles, and socks.

The school kit also contained goodies courtesy of Sunway PALS, Sunway Pyramid, Sunway Medical Centre, Monash University Malaysia and Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa.

The children also had the opportunity to learn ice-skating at Sunway Pyramid Ice, one of Malaysia’s largest ice skating rinks. As they learned to control and balance while relishing the joy of skating for the first time, the rink guards watched them closely to ensure their safety.

In addition, Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa and Sunway Group feted the children to a palatial buffet dinner which featured a wide variety of delectable Indian cuisine in addition to international fare.

Sunway Pyramid had earlier launched its Diwali celebration themed “The Passage of Diwali” with decorations inspired by the colourful Rangoli motifs such as the lotus, which symbolise happiness, prosperity and strength in adversity, while Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa’s theme of “The Illuminating Deepavali” reflects the spirit of Diwali.
