It is this understanding and recognition that education provides the grounding needed to give youths a chance to change their future and contribute to the development of our nation that has driven his passion for education and to the establishment of the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation.
“I believe in giving back to society and in education being the cornerstone of development and success. I want to help youths across Malaysia receive the quality education they deserve. I donated RM700m to set up the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, and since its establishment, it has donated RM66m benefitting more than 6000 students. The Foundation will continue to provide scholarships annually to those in need.” said Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah.
Established in 1997, and previously known as the Sunway Education Trust, the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation seeks to provide sustainable, quality education for present and future generations of deserving students. In his personal capacity and through the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah has made generous donations to further education across the nation.
In addition to the RM5m donated to FeCAM, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah has made donations to several educational institutions including SJK(C) Chee Wen, where more than RM4m has been donated including the RM1.2m which was recently raised at a Charity Fundraising Dinner hosted by the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation; Pusing Chinese School which received RM1.5m for the construction of their school hall; Klang Convent School which received RM1.3m for the repair of their school; RM3m for building of SRK Bandar Sunway when the contractor abandoned the construction work of the school; and SMJK Yuk Choi in Ipoh whose new school building will be completed at the end of this year following a RM1m donation.
“Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah’s achievements are impressive with business ventures in various parts of the world. However, despite his success, giving back to society is important to him and evidenced by the tremendously generous donations he has made for education and to society in general. Following his donation of RM5m and his previous donation of RM1.25m, Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah is FeCAM’s largest donor to date. We are thankful for his contributions.” said Tan Sri Pheng Yin Huah, FeCAM President at the press conference.
In addition to his contributions to education, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah has also made donations to society at large. Thirty years ago, when the North Malaysia Cheah Association needed money to purchase land for the construction of the Cheah clan temple, Datuk Cheah Fah, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah’s late father, donated RM150,000. When recent works required an additional RM250,000, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Jeffrey Cheah agreed to donate the amount without question.
