Renowned economist Professor Jeffrey Sachs, who tackled some of the most pressing global challenges – from the controversial US ban on foreign students at Harvard to ASEAN’s struggle for neutrality amid escalating global rivalries. Sachs didn’t hold back, delivering sharp insights into how international forces are reshaping the rules-based system, with nations scrambling for influence in an increasingly fractured world. On U.S. diplomacy, Sachs had this to say about former President Donald Trump: “He actually does not like war. This is the best news imaginable. (But) boy does he like money. His instinct is to make a deal. There might be some money in it.” Beyond policy and geopolitics, Sachs who is Sir Jeffrey Cheah Honorary Distinguished Professor in Sustainable Development at Sunway University, Malaysia and President of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network, emphasised the urgency of diplomatic pragmatism in an era of global upheaval. With ASEAN facing tough choices in an increasingly divided world, his message was clear: diplomacy must prevail over provocation, solutions over blame.

“He sounds like a politician – and by the way, an outstanding one.” In a bold defence of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s foreign policy, Prof. Jeffrey Sachs argues that what some see as contradictions are, in fact, pragmatic diplomacy. Hosted by Sunway Group founder and chairman Tan Sri Sir Dr. Jeffrey Cheah KBE AO, who is also the founder and chancellor of Sunway University, the forum was attended by the Minister of Housing and Local Government YB Nga Kor Ming, Subang Jaya State Assembly Member YB Michelle Ng, as well as ambassadors, high commissioners, senior bankers, and corporate leaders. Moderated by Sunway University pro-chancellor Prof. Dato’ Sri Dr. Idris Jala, the forum explored ASEAN’s strategic direction in the context of Malaysia’s chairmanship. In conjunction with World Children’s Day, Sunway Group founder and chairman Tan Sri Sir Dr. Jeffrey Cheah spends some time with the young, inquisitive minds at Sunway International School, taking on questions from the little curious minds and how they share laughter and boundless joy of learning.

Sunway was the top conglomerate winner having swept five awards at the inaugural The Star ESG Positive Impact Awards 2023, taking home two Gold in the “Responsible Consumption & Production” and “Transformation” categories, and three Silver in “Water Management & Efficiency,” “Diversity, Equity & Inclusion” and “Supply Chain Management” categories.

Our initiative in addressing food security marches on with the Sunway Meal Pack-a-Thon 2022! Alongside Rise Against Hunger Malaysia, the aim is to pack a total of 270,000 meals in 2022 with the help of more than 650 Sunway volunteers across five different locations throughout Malaysia – in line with our pledge to pack two million meals for the underserved communities nationwide.

Underscoring our commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 2: Zero Hunger by 2030, we continue to positively impact millions of beneficiaries across the country in the lead up to our 50th anniversary in 2024.

In line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 of ensuring healthy lives and promoting wellbeing for all, Sunway has committed to a long-term partnership with the Malaysian AIDS Foundation to establish the MAF-Sunway Borneo Health Outreach Programme for Everyone (HOPE) Project. The project addresses the socio-economic barriers to HIV treatment, prevention and care services across the Borneo states of Sabah and Sarawak, and supports the efforts of AIDS eradication throughout Malaysia by 2030.

The world is changing, and so must we on our journey to net zero by 2050. In conjunction with Zero Emissions Day, we present our five Sunway Sustainability Goals established – from environmental preservation and conservation, business ethics, to giving to our communities nationwide.

One of our biggest corporate contributors – FFM Berhad, played a big role by supplying over 5,000kg worth of grocery items, feeding more than 3,000 beneficiaries.

Mission 4.7 was founded by Global Schools and the SDG Academy, both flagship programs of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, and the Ban Ki-moon Centre for Global Citizens, in partnership with UNESCO and the Centre for Sustainable Development at The Earth Institute, Columbia University. The initiative brings together leaders from across the world to highlight the critical importance of SDG target 4.7 and its role in ensuring quality education for all and education for sustainable development.

Adding a Royal touch to the celebrations, DYMM Tengku Permaisuri Selangor Tengku Norashikin, graced a heartwarming Buka Puasa celebration hosted for 300 children from nine welfare homes across Selangor. In the spirit of giving, we also distributed Raya essentials, warm Bubur Lambuk, groceries from the Sunway Food Bank and hearty Buka Puasa meals in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Perak, Penang and Johor to spread joy and comfort among the underserved community. Our big and heartfelt thanks to our dedicated NGO partners — Yayasan Kebajikan Negara, Selangor Youth Community, Kechara Soup Kitchen, Malaysian Red Crescent and Mutiara Food Bank — for walking this journey with us. Since its inception, #SunwayforGood has touched the lives of hundreds of thousands individuals nationwide.
